I guess it is survival of the fittest. Those who are open-minded are not well suited for the pastoral environment (at least in the Adventist context.) Some of the exceptions you might want to check out include Ryan Bell, pastor of the Hollywood SDA Church, and Samir Selmanovic, who has a book out that I highly recommend called "It's all about God: Reflections of a Muslim Athiest Jewish Christian." Samir's main thesis is that we should search for God in the other, the people that are not like us.
